How students can adjust to university life

Leaving home for the first time and starting university life is a big milestone in every young adult’s life.

  1. Studying – get organised early on. Develop a timetable you can stick to that is dedicated to revision and study.
  2. Social – connect with people who you share common interests with. Don’t feel pressured into doing things you don’t want to.
  3. Finances – organise your finances so you understand how much you are spending and on what (bills, food, social).
  4. Self-care – don’t forget to look after yourself. It is important that you do things that promote positive wellbeing.
  5. Tutors – use your tutors for support, guidance and help. Don’t be afraid to talk to them if you are struggling.
  6. Physical – look after your physical health. Eat a well balanced diet, get into a good sleep routine and exercise.
  7. Family/friends – keep in regular contact with family and friends who are back home.
  8. Talk – talk to people about your feelings, thoughts and any problems (friends, relatives, uni counsellor).
  9. Independence – Get used to doing things on your own. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Do one thing 1 step at a time
  10. .Support – build a support network of friends who can encourage, listen, motivate and be there for you.
  11. Nerves – you are starting a new experience so you can expect to feel a bit nervous. Breathe, slow things down and stay calm.
  12. Mental health – pressure, stress, worry and anxiety are common factors whilst at uni. Develop positive mental health.
