Within the world of work, we have noticed a common trend among a wide variety of organisations. Mental health awareness is high on the agenda with workplaces prioritising resources for staff, mental health first aid, EAP programmes and monthly wellness days.
As important and useful as these processes are, we tend to see organisations adopting a short term and reactive approach towards mental health. Mental health is treated as a tick box exercise whereby one off sessions and access to unlimited resources are often used as the answer to mental health support in the workplace.
This reactive approach neglects a long-term duty of care towards employees and could be doing more harm than good.
At BelievePerform we are encouraging and supporting organisations to move beyond awareness and into action by creating mentally healthy high-performance cultures.
Creating a mentally healthy high-performance culture means seeing resilience as a proactive quality to support high performance, not an antidote to things in the current culture that may be damaging and contributing or causing declines in health and performance readiness.
It means creating a culture which is not contributing to any decline in a sense of control, confidence, and connectedness.
